Calling all my fabric home
I have a fabric cabinet, yet fabric seems to wander about the house. There are a few pieces on the rocker in the library. I like to look at them when I’m sitting there, because I know I will use them soon.
I would have sworn there was a bolt of red flannel in my footlocker. It was there for years, left over from a commission to make shirts for a firefighters’ museum. I guess I left that behind when I moved. The foot locker contained, to my surprise, white wool, and couple of jacket lengths of thinner wool, one died with indigo and the other with madder. That was a pleasant surprise. I felt no joy to find un-spun fiber, cashmere and wool, in the bottom of the foot locker. I went off spinning a couple of years ago. I’ll deal with that later. I am on a mission to find all the stray fabric and bring it home to the fabric cabinet.
I have plenty of linen. I don’t want to know how much, but thirty yards would not surprise me.I have enough cotton to make clothing for my felt rabbit, and to keep on making face masks, since it seems we will be wearing them for some time to come. I have some wool, but nothing light enough to make dresses. I will need some wool challis.
I will settle for silk noil, which I have in yellow ochre, which does not look good on me. Attempts to dye it in indigo resulted in seal brown or a dark ochre…more colors that do not look good on me. I may try Jacquard dye in turquoise and would be happy if I managed a drab green. I need more silk.
For the past few days, I have been measuring and tagging everything until I ran out of tags. I sorted thread by fiber content and color, rejoicing in how much cotton thread I had, being overjoyed by a few wooden spools of silk twist, and feeling very sad that nearly half of the thread is polyester. I cannot buy another spool of it, no matter how much I want the color. No more plastic thread.
These sewing supplies have waited patiently for me since 2008, the last time I sewed any clothing. The reunion has been joyous.
